Communication Acoustics (in English)


The lecture gives an overview about all aspects that play an important role for audio technology and audio communication. The content covers technical and perceptual fundamentals as well as application relevant aspects. Hence, the lecture offers engineers and information technologists a unique access to an end-to-end perspektive about the signal processing chain and the underlying acoustic perception.

Lecture topics

  • Fundamentals of acoustics: Wave propagation, room acoustics, mikrophones, loudspeakers;
  • Fundamentals of hearing: monaural, binaural;
  • Sound recording technologies: Mikrophonarrays, Preprocessing algorithms;
  • Sound reproduction technologies: binaural, stereophonic, WFS;
  • Coding and Metadata;
  • Quality and Speech intelligibility;
  • Multichannel sound systems, virtual acoustics; applications.

Kommunikationsakustik Übung (in German)


Begleitend zur Vorlesung werden Prinzipien der akustischen Signalverarbeitung, Audiotechnik, Hörwahrnehmung sowie menschlichen auditorischen Signalverarbeitung in praktischen Übungen mit direktem Zusammenhang zu den jeweiligen Vorlesungsstunden vertieft. Dabei werden sowohl Rechen- und Programmieraufgaben mittels Matlab/Octave als auch praktische Aufgaben mit Audio-Equipment bearbeitet.

Models of Auditory Perception (in English)


Mixture of oral presentations by supervisors and students. Written ellaboration by the students in the format of short conference papers.

  • Signal processing models of the middle and inner ear;
  • Models of Sound Source Separation and binaural perception: Equalization-Cancellation Model (EC), Localisation models;
  • Models of speech intelligibility: Speech Transmission Index (STI), Speech Intelligibility Index (SII), EC-based Model;
  • Speech quality models: ITU-T’s P.OLQA (P.863), PESQ (P.862), E-Model; Audio quality modell: PEAQ
